Exploring the Space of Possibility

What if invention is the discovery of possibilities nature already permits—and AI helps us explore that space faster?

What If? Part 3: Exploring the Space of Possibility

While thinking about Generative AI, another thought came to my mind.
Isn't almost every invention actually generative?
We didn't invent physics.
We discovered its rules and built airplanes.
We didn't invent chemistry.
We understood it and created new materials and medicines.
We didn't invent DNA.
Nature did but today we can read it, edit it and increasingly design with biology.
So are we really inventing things?
Or are we discovering new configurations within a huge space of possibilities that nature already allows?
Perhaps that's what generation has always been.
Nature sets the rules.
Imagination explores beyond them.
Science discovers them.
Engineering turns possibilities into reality.
And perhaps this is where AI changes the game.
It can explore these possibility spaces at a scale and speed humans never could.
Millions of molecules.
New materials.
New proteins.
New engineering designs.
Maybe Generative AI isn't teaching machines to create.
Maybe it's teaching machines to explore what's possible.
And that takes me to my next question:
What happens when AI starts exploring all these possibilities together?
