WHAT IF? / PART 01 OF 7
Beyond Generative AI
Could AI move beyond digital content to help create medicines, materials and machines? A first look at Generative Science.

We call it Generative AI because today we see it generating text, images, videos and code.
But maybe we are defining it by its earliest outputs.
AI is already moving beyond content. We are seeing it being applied to proteins, molecules, drug discovery, materials and engineering.
Now imagine these technologies converging.
AI + Robotics + 3D Printing + Synthetic Biology + CRISPR.
One system generates the design. Another tests it. Another manufactures it. Another modifies biology.
Suddenly, “generative” doesn't only mean generating something on a screen.
It could mean generating something in the physical world.
A medicine.
A material.
A machine.
Perhaps, much further into the future, even new biological systems.
I run a technology company, so naturally I look at this from a software perspective. For decades, software mostly told machines what to do.
AI is beginning to give machines the ability to help decide what should be created.
That feels like a much bigger transition than chatbots.
Maybe Generative AI isn't the destination.
Maybe it's just the first chapter of Generative Science.
And if that's true, the next 50 years could look very different from what we're imagining today.
What happens when AI doesn't just generate information but helps generate the physical world?
